CCCADI's 2nd Annual Spring Gala Reception

CCCADI invites you to the 2nd Annual Spring Gala Reception on Wednesday, April 5, 2017 at the Loeb Central Park Boathouse. Join us celebrate our 40th Anniversary, the Grand Opening of our new home, and the spirit of activism through honoring The New York Women’s Foundation, Susan L. Taylor, Opal Tometi, and Ben Rodriguez-Cubeñas, for their work in arts, culture, and social justice. Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito will receive the Firehouse Legacy Award for her tireless work in local activism, nonprofit organizations and labor for over a decade; her trailblazing role in government for Latinos and women; and her staunch support of CCCADI. 

Come prepared for a carnival-themed evening of dinner, open bar, and live performances from Afro-Brazilian music and dance ensemble, Dendê & Band, and Harlem's very own DjStormin Norman

FIREHOUSE LEGACY AWARDEE MELISSA MARK-VIVERITO

Melissa Mark-Viverito

 

Melissa Mark-Viverito serves as the Speaker of the New York City Council, the first Puerto Rican and Latina to hold citywide office. She represents the 8th District, which includes El Barrio/East Harlem and the South Bronx. Born in Bayamón, Puerto Rico, she worked for over a decade in local activism, nonprofit organizations and grassroots labor organizing before being elected to the City Council in 2005. She was unanimously elected to serve as New York City Council Speaker in January 2014.

Led by Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, New York City has emerged as a national leader in the fight for comprehensive immigration reform. Speaker Mark-Viverito is also an outspoken advocate for local and national criminal justice reform, and launched the Young Women’s Initiative to address disparities faced by women in such areas as education, workforce development, healthcare, and the criminal justice system.

In 2011, she was one of four Council Members to pioneer the first-ever Participatory Budgeting process in New York City. Since Mark-Viverito’s speakership, Participatory Budgeting has spread to 31 districts across New York City.

Before becoming Speaker in 2014, Melissa served as founding co-chair of the New York City Council Progressive Caucus. From 2010 -2013, she also chaired the City Council Committee on Parks and Recreation.

 


 

SPECIAL PERFORMANCE BY DENDE & BAND

Dende Band

Dendê is a percussionist, singer, composer, bandleader, teacher, and multi-instrumentalist. He’s been a professional musician since the age of 14, when he appeared in the frontline of Timbalada, Carlinhos Brown’s superstar percussion ensemble. Since 2001, he’s been developing his solo career, splitting his time between the US and Bahia. Now on their second album, Dendê & Band have cultivated a unique sound where Afro-Brazilian traditions like samba de roda and candomble have been seemlessly melded with world rhythms like rumba, afrobeat and mbalax. Dendê & Band have recently performed at venues such as the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles; the KW Latinfest in Ontario, Canada; the Penang World Music Festival inMalaysia; Summerdance in Chicago and the Chile Pepper Fiesta at the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens.

Gala DJ Stormin' Norman

DJ Stormin Norman CCCADI Gala DJ

From East London, UK now living in Harlem, NYC, DJ Stormin’ Norman has been on the scene for the last 20 years wearing many hats as a DJ, Air Personality, Host, Actor and Executive Producer.  In the  90’s, Stormin’ was one of the DJ’s responsible for bringing live mixing to New York City with the team of DJs called the Thunderstorm DJs on 107.5 W.B.L.S.  This began live mixing during the daytime, (usually reserved for nights and weekends) that changed the face of radio music programming not only in New York but all over the world. Most recently played on 3 continents in Africa, Australia and European.  He is known for his versatility ranging from Funk, Soul, Disco Classics, Soulful House, Afro House, and 90’s Hip-Hop and at one point The Village Voice rating Stormin’ as one of the Top Ten DJs in New York City. Currently Norman is the Executive Producer/Dj and Host of his own Music Festival called Sundae Sermon which is one of New York City’s most anticipated summer music festivals based in Harlem with attendance upwards of 7000 people.  Past performers have played with his Legendary djs like Louie Vega, Tony Humphries and Pete Rock and of course yours truly Dj Stormin’ Norman.   7 Years running with attendees of the who’s who like Rosie Perez, Leon, Bevy Smith of Fashion Queens to name a few, taste makers, politicians and was asked to shoot with the “Cake Boss” while supporting Fela and Motown on Broadway.


Although radio was a creative means to expand his audience, Stormin’ enjoys the instant reaction of the club audience.  Living in New York City Stormin’ has been blessed to play in legendary Clubs from the Roxy, Limelight, and Lotus to The Hudson, Cielo, Miami’s Dorchester Hotel and LA’s The Standard Downtown rooftop.
