Caribbean Cultural Center 30th Anniversary 2006- Press Release
NEW YORK, November 3, 2005— Join Susan Taylor, Rosie Perez, Mario Baeza, Danny Glover, and Miriam Muley, our honorary chairs, in celebrating the Caribbean Cultural Center’s 30th Anniversary in 2006! The Franklin H. Williams Caribbean Cultural Center/African Diaspora Institute was founded in 1976 by Dr. Marta Moreno Vega. Today, it is one of the few cultural groups that has moved from success to success to become one of New York’s leading cultural groups dedicated to documenting, celebrating and sharing the cultural heritage of people of African descent, through multidisciplinary programs such as concerts, lectures, workshops, art exhibitions and conferences.
For its 30th Anniversary year, the Caribbean Cultural Center is rededicating itself with our official theme ‘Making the Invisible Visible’. This is the notion by which the Caribbean Cultural Center/African Diaspora Institute was created; to serve underserved communities of color globally and to highlight the cultural contributions and creative expressions of people African people everywhere.
Our 30th Anniversary kicks off with the official launch of the Center’s new logo and website on January 5th that reinforces our theme of making visible the vast history of achievements of people of color and ensures that our new face will look towards the future, continuing to celebrate the changing internationally diverse communities that is the fabric of New York City and the world today. January 9th is the Center’s first exhibition ‘African by Legacy, Mexican by Birth’, that features the extraordinary photographic work of Ayana V. Jackson and the powerful narrative of Marcos Villalobos whose work addresses the role of racial and cultural citizenship as it impacts the lives of African descendents in Mexico and throughout the Americas.
The year-long celebration of extraordinary programs continues with artists such as the Mighty Sparrow, I-Threes, Xenobia Bailey and events such as the ‘Women of Power’ and ‘Orisha’ Conferences, the 3rd Annual Latin Collectors Festival, Carnival in New York, and will collaborate with venues such as the Lincoln Center of Performing Arts, the Apollo Theater, Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), the Time Warner Center and much more.
