3rd Annual Women of Power Conference
When: Thurs, March 13 to Fri, March 14, 2008
Where:  Hunter College, (CUNY) and CCCADI

Free Admission

Women of Power is the coming together of Afro Latinas activists from Latin America, the Caribbean and Central America who are working to transform and envision an empowering future for their communities, to meet with their sisters and communities in the United States that are also working on issues of social justice and  human rights.  The coming together of women of the African Diaspora bridges and shares information and experiences that enlighten and develop collaborative networks of mutual support.

SPEAK OUT: Harlem Quilts Exhibition
When: March 22–June 27, 2008
Where: Caribbean Cultural Center, African Diaspora Institute (CCCADI)
Suggested Donation $5, CCCADI Members Free
Armed with the fabrics of their craft, the  members of Harlem Girls Quilting Circle (HGQC) offer social commentary through quilts.  The pieces featured in SPEAK OUT reflect the issues  that affect their lives.  Through SPEAK OUT,as fiber correspondents, HGQC questions and offers dialogue about matters of community, family,  human rights, gentrification, politics, culture, solidarity, economics, education, and religion.

Haiti's Children of God
Date: Thursday, April 17th, 2008

In collaboration with the Caribbean American Repertory Theatre Inc and NYIHA MEDIA this will be an interactive evening of a stage reading of Haiti Children’s of God and film screening 'Human Rights in Quisqueya’ that explores the many reasons behind Haiti migration and the social, economical and education issues they face.

This digital tapestry of divergent viewpoints on Haitians in Dominican Republic reflects our constant monitoring of media coverage of human rights in the Dominican Republic.  The treatment of Haitian migration to the Dominican Republic is overly politicized.  Any solution must be humane and in compliance with  international laws.

Book Reading: Our Caribbean: A Gathering of Lesbian & Gay Writings from the Antilles

The first book of its kind, Our Caribbean is an anthology of lesbian and gay writing from across the Antilles. The author and activist Thomas Glave has gathered outstanding fiction, nonfiction, memoir, and poetry by little-known writers along with selections by internationally celebrated figures.

Williams Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute ("CCCADI"), in partnership with Lincoln Center Out of Doors, will celebrate Graciela’s 93rd Birthday with an All Star Tribute featuring José Alberto “el Canario” y su Orquesta with special guests Xiomara Laugart and David Oquendo, Orlando “Puntilla” Rios y Nueva Generación and with a special appearance by GRACIELA. This concert begins at 7:30 pm in Damrosch Park Bandshell, West 62nd Street and Amsterdam Avenue, and is FREE and open to the public.

These beaded and sequined Vodou flags are both a sacred items and an art form.   The flags embody  and reflect  the co-existence of Catholicism and African religious beliefs that honor Vodou. Iconic Images found in churches that appear to celebrate Catholicism are actually masks for the symbols and imagery that reflect the ancient divinities of ancient Dahomey.
