CCCADI & Lincoln Center present ‘AFRICARNAVAL: A Tribute to Calypso Rose’

  • The Dance Floor at Josie Robertson Plaza 10 Lincoln Center Plaza New York, New York, 10023 United States (map)

CCCADI and Lincoln Center are honored to present AfriCarnaval, an evening celebrating the Carnival traditions of Brazil and Trinidad & Tobago, in honor of Calypso Rose, the undisputed “Queen of The Road”.

As we continue to celebrate CCCADI’s milestone 50th Anniversary Year, AfriCarnaval marks a historic, full circle moment:  it brings us back to the Carnival in NY series of events that CCCADI presented at Lincoln Center throughout the 1980’s and 90’s which highlighted the diversity of Carnival traditions throughout the African Diaspora.

AfriCarnaval, presented as part of Lincoln Center’s Summer for the City program series, carries that legacy forward, celebrating Carnival as a living practice of our culture, joy and resistance.

There are two ways to access this FREE event:
1.  General Admission, first-come first-served. Just show up!
2.  Fast Track opening the Monday before the event at noon via the Lincoln Center website. (Monday, July 6 at 12PM)

Look out for our Community Archiving Lab pop-up table, where we will be showcasing materials from CCCADI’s 50-year Living Archive that highlight the enduring collaboration between CCCADI & Lincoln Center, including performances from Calypso Rose, Ismael Rivera and many more.

Calypso Rose was born in Tobago, where she began singing at the age of fifteen.  In 1978, she became the first woman to win the National Calypso Monarch competition in Trinidad & Tobago, which was known as the National Calypso King competition until Calypso Rose showed up.

Calypso Rose has won more honors and medals than any other living Calypsonian, and is known as the “Queen of Calypso” worldwide.

CCCADI is a 50-year arts, culture, education & media organization dedicated to advancing cultural equity and racial and social justice for African descendants everywhere.

The start of the CCCADI & Lincoln Center collaboration dates back to September 1979 and CCCADI’s Caribbean Expressions Festival.  Since then, they have collaborated on over 20 concerts, film screenings, festivals and conferences.
