Join TheNewCari.Com team –alongside Cybille St. Aude-Tate, Kigan Jo, Nikiesha Hamilton and Richard “Treats” Dryden– for a conversation shaped around the myriad spaces and events that provide an atmosphere for us to curate, share, and archive our Caribbean culture.
Before experiential events and lifestyle marketing became the norm, cultural institutions held the vital task of maintaining, archiving, and passing on our traditions. Throughout our time in this country, the keeping of the culture has taken many forms- academic research, literature, music, fine art, folk art, performance, and countless other mediums.
TheNewCari.Com and friends will reflect on the necessity of this work and the connections we can forge between our past and future. Together, we’ll explore the importance of third spaces constructed to honor our rich history and engage with themes that strengthen our cultural identity.
Conversation themes include:
Mapping Caribbeanness,
Generational throughlines
Remembering as a guide for creation
Connectivity across communities
Third spaces as cultural institutions
“Performing” cultural works
This evening will also spotlight some of CCCADI’s event posters and artwork that have resurfaced during the Community Archiving Lab for Culture and Justice – pieces that reflect nearly 50 years of intentional cultural production and that stand on their own as works of art.
The New Cari .Com is a publication and agency uplifting the stories of Caribbean creatives across the Diaspora. Founded in June 2022 by City Skyline, Tassja Walker and Andrea K. Castillo, they’ve printed a collection of zines on Culture + Community, Style, Art, and Taste. Multiple volumes of their zines will be available for purchase.
